The MG Extender is the first pick-up truck introduced by the MG brand under SAIC Motor. Making its global debut in Thailand in August 2019, it is sold across overseas markets including Thailand, Laos, and Pakistan. The vehicle is essentially a rebadged version of China's domestic SAIC Maxus T70 (the replacement for the original T60), assembled and produced at the Laem Chabang plant in Thailand by SAIC-CP, a joint venture between SAIC Motor and Thailand's Charoen Pokphand Group.
MG chose Thailand for its global debut as the country boasts one of the world's most deep-rooted pick-up cultures and highest market shares for the segment, where pick-up trucks account for roughly half of total annual new vehicle sales. Positioned as a mid-to-high-end mid-size pick-up for both commercial and lifestyle family use, the MG Extender was launched with prices ranging from 549,000 to 1,029,000 Thai Baht (approx. RM126,000 to RM236,000), employing a high-spec, value-for-money strategy to challenge Japanese heavyweights like the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max.
The MG Extender retains the overall silhouette of the SAIC Maxus T70, but receives MG's signature starlight front grille design bearing the central MG octagon badge, flanked by projector LED headlamps. At the rear, the embossed Maxus lettering is replaced with a subtle circular MG badge, flanked by the British heritage-inspired "BRIT DYNAMIC" emblem on the upper left and the Extender model badge on the right. In 2021, the MG Extender received a mid-cycle facelift at the Bangkok International Motor Show, introducing a refreshed front fascia to sharpen its competitive edge in Thailand's hotly contested pick-up market.
In terms of dimensions, the short-wheelbase version measures 5,365 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, and has a 3,155 mm wheelbase, available in two body configurations: Giant Cab (extended cab) and Double Cab (four-door). The interior features a right-hand-drive layout with a sporty black leather finish accented by red contrast stitching, with matching red stitching highlights applied across the dashboard and seats on selected variants.
Powering the MG Extender is SAIC's proprietary "SAIC π" 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, featuring high-pressure common-rail direct injection and a 15.9:1 compression ratio. It delivers a maximum output of 161 PS (119 kW) and a peak torque of 375 Nm between 1,500 and 2,400 rpm, offering punchy low-end torque performance. The engine complies with Euro 6 emission standards and comes with a 73-litre fuel tank. Top speed is rated at 180 km/h.
Transmission options include a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic (6AT), available in both rear-wheel drive (2WD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) layouts. Data from the Pakistani market indicates an average fuel economy of around 10–12 km/L.
Built on a ladder-frame chassis (body-on-frame), the Extender features double-wishbone independent suspension up front and a leaf-spring rigid axle setup at the rear—a proven pick-up configuration balancing heavy payload capacity with off-road capability. Unlike most rivals in the Thai market that still rely on hydraulic power steering, the MG Extender comes fitted with an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system for a lighter and more precise steering feel.
Braking duties are handled by front ventilated discs and rear drums, paired with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB). It rides on 215/70 R15 tyres, featuring a minimum turning radius of 6.0 metres and a ground clearance of 145 mm. The 4WD variants offer solid off-road capability, with higher-spec trims further equipped with Hill Start Assist (HSA), Traction Control System (TCS), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).
The cabin is fitted with a 10-inch central touchscreen infotainment unit supporting MP3, USB, and AUX inputs, integrated with the i-Smart voice control system supporting the Thai language for a localised user experience. Selected variants also offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.
Higher-spec models feature leather upholstery, with the front seats on Double Cab variants able to recline up to 150 degrees for roadside resting convenience. Overall, the cabin presents noticeable advantages in material refinement and equipment levels compared to same-priced competitors.
Top-spec variants of the MG Extender are equipped with a comprehensive ADAS suite, including full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC, 0–180 km/h), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), and Intelligent High Beam Control (IHC). On the passive safety front, flagship grades offer six airbags, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), and a 360-degree surround-view camera, putting its safety credentials among the best in its class.
The MG Extender received a relatively lukewarm market response upon launch. From its 2019 debut through to the end of 2020, cumulative sales stood at around 5,800 units, trailing far behind segment leaders such as the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max, which consistently post six-figure annual figures. In 2023, only 930 units of the Extender were sold in Thailand, capturing a mere 0.35% market share.
However, 2024 witnessed a remarkable reversal. Even as Thailand's overall pick-up market contracted sharply by 38.3% to 163,000 units, the MG Extender bucked the industry trend with a 20.86% sales growth, delivering 1,124 units to become the only pick-up model in Thailand to post year-on-year growth that year. In December 2024 alone, monthly sales surged by 235.42%, securing seventh place overall in the full-year pick-up rankings.
Nevertheless, persistently weak broader demand has prompted SAIC-CP to temporarily pause production of the MG Extender in Thailand. MG Thailand noted that pick-up trucks are not the brand's core volume driver, meaning the production halt will have minimal impact, with assembly slated to resume once the market recovers. The vehicle marks MG's maiden venture into Southeast Asia's cut-throat pick-up arena and highlights SAIC Motor's global strategy of cross-brand synergy across overseas markets.
